Backcast supports worthwhile charitable and community awareness endeavors that are meaningful to us, our borrowers and our investors. In that spirit, Backcast is designing a rotational hiring and training program for our country’s military veterans, with a focus on veterans coming from historically disadvantaged communities. We will also be donating a portion of our profits to worthy charities. Our first charitable recipient will be The Headstrong Project (www.getheadstrong.org), a charity co-founded by David Petrucco. In partnership with Weill Cornell Medical College, Headstrong provides cost-, stigma- and bureaucracy-free treatment for Iraq and Afghanistan veterans who are suffering from severe PTSD and are at risk of suicide. Headstrong currently operates in New York City, San Diego, Houston, Los Angeles, Washington, DC and Chicago, and will soon offer its services in Denver, with nationwide expansion plans.
We will also be supporting Backcast Partner Mark Gudis’ family initiative to continue providing AED (“automated external defibrillator”) machines which can save the lives of individuals who suffer sudden cardiac arrest, a condition which is often fatal and affects 400,000 people per year in the U.S. The goal of this endeavor is not only to donate as many of these devices as possible to communities in need, but also to develop a self-funding model program focused on training and education in public school systems that can be replicated throughout the entire nation.
